Manhattan Beach, CA, has a rich history that spans a relatively short period compared to some other cities. Originally part of the ten-mile ocean frontage of Rancho Sausal Redondo, the area was referred to as “Round Clump of Willows.” Around 1901, John Merrill and his company acquired the land, which was initially planned as Potencia Beach. They envisioned a new resort town and named it Manhattan Beach, inspired by a successful and exclusive beach hotel resort in New York’s Coney Island.
The first downtown building, constructed by Merrill in 1901, was a small frame building that later served as city offices. The official date of incorporation for Manhattan Beach was December 7, 1912. Planks were laid in the sand on Manhattan Avenue for vehicles, while the Strand and side streets had wooden planks for pedestrians.
The area’s first pier was built by the Los Angeles Ocean Power Company around 1897 or 1898 at the foot of Center Street. The pier featured iron pilings and supported a wave motor used to generate power for the Strand lighting system. Unfortunately, during a storm in 1899, a 30′ portion of the pier with some machinery was lost to the ocean.
Another pier was subsequently built on the same site, extending approximately 922 feet into the ocean. Engineer A.L. Harris introduced the concept of a circular end to reduce exposure and damage to the pilings caused by waves. This new pier was completed and dedicated on July 5, 1920, with the Roundhouse, an essential structure, completed in 1922.
After World War II, Manhattan Beach experienced a surge in population due to its desirability as a year-round living destination. Many servicemen who had visited during the war chose to return and settle in the area. Additionally, the development of the defense industry attracted numerous residents to the South Bay region, leading to the expansion of housing east of Sepulveda to accommodate the influx of people.
