Granada Hills, situated in the north San Fernando Valley, has a rich history dating back to the 1880s. Originally acquired by George K. Porter, the land was primarily used for farming, with crops like beans and wheat dominating the landscape.
In 1917, J.H. Moshier, a wealthy oilman from Oklahoma, purchased a large portion of the land and named it the Sunshine Ranch. The area witnessed extensive citrus plantation and housing development during the early 1920s, but a subsequent change in ownership led to the subdivision of the land.
Enter Suburban Estates, Inc., a holding company associated with prominent subdividers Edwards and Wildey Company. They transformed the lower section of the ranch into large lots and, later, smaller residential and business lots. The community grew with the establishment of schools, business districts, and the Granada Women’s Club.
Despite initial optimism, Granada faced challenges in the late 1920s, including the Great Depression and issues with the subdivision management. However, the community persevered, and improvements like paved streets and utility installations were completed by 1931.
In 1932, Suburban Estates, Inc. went into receivership, and the California Trust Co. took over. The name of the community was officially changed to Granada Hills in 1942 to avoid confusion with another town, and the Granada Hills branch post office was established.
Today, Granada Hills thrives as a scenic and smog-free community, boasting a unique landscape of eucalyptus trees and orange orchards. It has seen steady development and growth over the years, with new business buildings and a strong sense of community.
