Window Installation Service in Lake Sherwood, CA

Lake Sherwood, a picturesque unincorporated community in Ventura County, is home to approximately 1,500 residents and boasts breathtaking views of the Lake Sherwood reservoir. Situated south of Thousand Oaks and west of Westlake Village, it is easily accessible via Potrero Road, Westlake Boulevard, Wendy Drive, and Reino Road in Newbury Park.

The history of Lake Sherwood dates back centuries when the Chumash people inhabited the Conejo Valley. In the late 18th century, the Spanish arrived and named the region the Potrero Valley as they passed through what is now Hidden Valley.

Originally part of Rancho El Conejo, the Potrero Valley became a significant tract of the land. In 1888, the Howards sold it to the Banning Company of Long Beach, and later, in 1896, W. H. Matthiessen acquired the Potrero Ranch. Notably, in 1904, Matthiessen constructed a 45-foot dam, creating Potrero Lake, which is now known as Lake Sherwood, with an impressive capacity of 877 million gallons.

The area around the lake gained fame in the 1920s when it was transformed into Sherwood Forest for the filming of the iconic Robin Hood movie, starring Douglas Fairbanks. Thus, the name “Lake Sherwood” was born.

Over the years, the lake and surrounding land passed through several hands, experiencing various developments and film appearances. In 1963, Dayton Realty purchased the property and had plans for extensive development, which were eventually opposed and rejected by local residents and the Ventura County Board of Supervisors.

The lake, which was once made available to the public, was later drained by Dayton Realty in the 1980s for testing, but it was never refilled, resulting in the unfortunate loss of wildlife. However, in 1985, billionaire businessman David Murdock acquired the dry lake bed and surrounding area. Heavy rains in 1986 filled Lake Sherwood once again, although it took several years for the wildlife to return fully.

Under Murdock’s ownership, Lake Sherwood has been developed into a thriving community with more than 650 homes spread across three gated neighborhoods. Additionally, the Sherwood Country Club and Sherwood Lake Club now grace the area. However, please note that the lake is privately owned and not accessible to the general public.
