Agoura Hills is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. It is situated in the eastern Conejo Valley between the Simi Hills and the Santa Monica Mountains. The city has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. José Maria Dominguez was given Rancho Las Virgenes as a Mexican land grant in 1834. Later, in 1845, Maria Antonia Machado de Reyes purchased the rancho from Dominguez. The Reyes Adobe, which was the ranch headquarters, is now part of the Reyes Adobe Museum, owned by the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department.
In the early 1900s, Agoura Hills became a popular stage stop for travelers due to its natural spring. It provided a convenient resting place for those traveling through the area.
During the 1920s, the community was briefly known as Picture City because Paramount Pictures owned a ranch called Paramount Ranch, which was used for filming Westerns. The area gained recognition in the film industry during this time.
To establish a post office, the residents of the community were required to choose a one-word name. In 1927, they chose Agoura, which was a misspelling of the last name of Pierre Agoure. Agoure was a local Basque man and French immigrant who settled in the area in 1871 to live the lifestyle of a Mexican rancher.
Today, Agoura Hills is a thriving city with a population of around 20,000 residents. It offers a suburban feel with a mix of residential and commercial areas. The city is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including hiking trails, parks, and open spaces. It also has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with various events and festivals throughout the year.
